One ray of light from out Thy dwelling-place to pierce my night, oh God, and draw me near.

Hafiz

Poems from the Divan of Hafiz, tr. Gertrude Lowthian Bell (1897), poem XXIV

Hafiz asks for one ray. Not for the sun, not for the day, and not for the night to be taken away — one ray, which is enough because it does not have to fill anything to reach. Light does not need darkness to be overcome. The darkness needs only the one ray.
