Prayer places our understanding in the brightness of the light of God, and exposes our will to the warmth of heavenly love.

Francis de Sales

The Life of Devotion, tr. and ed. C. Yeld, 1869, Part II, Chapter I, of the necessity of Prayer

Two things happen at once, and de Sales keeps them joined. The understanding is placed in brightness, and the will is exposed to warmth. One is what a person comes to see, the other is what a person comes to want, and he does not separate them. Notice that neither is earned by effort here. Both are described as places a person is put. Prayer is not the work. It is the standing where the light and the warmth can reach you.
