As many as resist not this light, but receive the same, in them is produced an holy, pure, and spiritual birth, bringing forth holiness, righteousness, purity, and all those other blessed fruits which are acceptable to God.

Robert Barclay

An Apology for the True Christian Divinity, the Sixth and Seventh Propositions, 1869 edition

Barclay puts the whole matter in the negative. He does not say what a person must do. He says what happens in those who do not resist. The light is already there to be resisted, which means it arrives before anyone agrees to it. Then he is careful about the result. He calls it a birth, not an achievement, and a birth is not something the born person arranges. Everything he lists after that is described as fruit, which is what grows when nothing is standing in the way.
