The Alchemy of Happiness

Al-Ghazali · 1910

Ghazali taught in Baghdad and then left it, spending years travelling and keeping company with the Sufis before he wrote this. It is not an argument for a doctrine; it is a working account of what he found. He is short with people who say the right words and know nothing by them, and he keeps returning to one point: the obstruction is on our side, not in the light.

God is like the sun, which is always shining, but sometimes for us His light is eclipsed by some object which intervenes between us and Him.
