Like as the air is stricken by the sunbeam, and by the shining of his light is altogether shining

Richard Rolle

The Fire of Love (Richard Rolle, tr. Frances M. M. Comper, Methuen, 1914), page 120

Rolle does not say the air was lit. He says it was altogether shining — as though the light passing through it had become its own. That is how light behaves toward whatever it touches, and it asks nothing first. It comes whether or not anyone is ready for it, and what it passes through carries it onward.
