The more that a man is joined to Thee and the more that he is gathered together in Thee, the more he understandeth without labour high secret mysteries, for he hath received from above the light of understanding.

Thomas à Kempis

The Imitation of Christ (tr. Richard Whitford, Raynal edition 1872)

À Kempis does not describe the light or say how it arrives. He says only that it is received, and that it comes to a person who has stopped scattering themselves and gathered instead. Nothing here is earned, and nothing is owed. The understanding comes from above.
