There be two days or two lights. The first is a false light, the second a true light.

Walter Hilton

The Scale of Perfection, Book II, Chapter V (Walter Hilton)

Hilton does not say there is only one light. He says there are two, and that they are easy to mistake for each other: one that promises and then passes away, and one that stays. He is not asking anyone to mistrust what they see. He is answering the question a visitor arrives with — whether the thing they are looking at is the sign they hoped for, or only its likeness.
