The Suns Light when he unfolds it Depends on the Organ that beholds it

William Blake

Frontispiece of For the Sexes: The Gates of Paradise (1793), under the caption “What is Man!”

Blake does not say the light changes. He says the organ does — the eye that receives it. The same sun, the same hour, two people: one looks into it, one puts on sunglasses. Neither of them dimmed the light. Light does what light does; it comes after the night or before dawn, no matter what someone feels or thinks. What differs is the beholder, and the light meets each one at whatever level of the journey they are standing on.
