By love may He be gotten and holden; but by thought never

Author unknown

The Cloud of Unknowing, an anonymous Middle English text, fourteenth century

The author of this sentence left no name, and the sentence does not need one. Thought will not get you there. That is the plainest thing in the book, and the plainest comfort in it too: love will. Not a feeling you work up, but the act of turning toward what is in front of you and staying there. Light does not wait to be understood.
