Notice that it is not the fountain and the brilliant sun which lose their splendour and beauty, for they are placed in the very centre of the soul and cannot be deprived of their lustre.

Teresa of Ávila

The Interior Castle or The Mansions, tr. the Benedictines of Stanbrook, rev. Benedict Zimmerman, 2nd ed., Benziger Brothers, 1912, First Mansions, Chapter II

Teresa is not promising a feeling. She is making a plain statement about what can and cannot be lost. The fountain and the sun are not described as rewards, and they are not described as earned. They are placed, and what is placed in the centre is not exposed to the surface. Notice also which direction she leaves out. She does not say the soul must climb up to them. She says they are already there, and that the trouble is on the outside of them.
