God is like the sun, which is always shining, but sometimes for us His light is eclipsed by some object which intervenes between us and Him.

Al-Ghazali

The Alchemy of Happiness, tr. Claud Field, Wisdom of the East Series, London: John Murray, 1910, Chapter V

Ghazali does not say the sun goes out, and he does not say it withdraws. He says something intervenes, which puts the whole matter on our side of the line. The light is doing what it always does. What changes is what is standing in the way. He also keeps the image ordinary: an eclipse is not a punishment and it is not a lesson, it is an obstruction, and obstructions move. Nothing here asks anyone to earn the sun.
