For the light is from the Good, and an image of the Goodness, wherefore also the Good is celebrated under the name of Light; as in a portrait the original is manifested

Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite

On the Divine Names, Chapter IV (Dionysius the Areopagite, Works, 1897)

He does not say the light stands for something else. A portrait does not stand in for the person in it; it shows them — so the light anywhere, the sun on a wall or a stranger’s face, is not a copy of the original, but the original appearing.
